Educators Emphasize Soft Skills, Learning

As the global community moves into the beginning of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, educators have to find new, innovative methods for imparting information to today's youth. Technology has definitely played a major role in facilitating learning in a day and age when students must prepare to work in a digitized world. However, trends in 2022 are not only focusing on technology as a way to improve learning.

Many trends around the country show educators are focusing on soft skills and life-long learning. Increasingly, educators recognize that skills learned in the classroom segue into ones they need as they transition into the workforce. While technology is a very integral part of learning, it is not the only important part.

For example, one of the trends seen across the educational platform relates to teaching students the soft skills needed to get along in the world, much less the workplace. In higher education, especially, educators are teaching skills related to problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, and people management.

Further, by focusing on these skill areas, higher education institutions will find their students more prepared to get hired and work with diverse groups of people. As a result, many of these institutions will find themselves more competitive as alumni success rate becomes a reflection of their efforts to prepare students for work after college.

In addition to helping students learn soft skills, teachers have evolved into becoming facilitators where the instructor focuses on student learning. In this era of education, many educators have abandoned the top-down delivery method of teaching with the teacher standing at the head of the classroom and imparting information to students, some who are engaged and some who are not.

Instead, today's teachers are helping students to love learning, understand learning, and digest the information they uncover. Ultimately, in focusing on helping students learn, educators encourage students to take ownership of their education, which results in deeper student development over time compared with a knowledge delivery format of educating students.

Finally, life-long learning has been a big trend not only in 2022 but in the last few years. As is the case with shifts in industry and business, the Fourth Industrial Revolution has required many to re-skill because some experts estimate that this revolution has impacted 50 percent of jobs. Re-skilling has been the result of technological processes moving at lightning speed and changing the way everyone works and does business.

Moreover, while a vocational or university degree is important, professionals who wish to remain competitive cannot simply rely on the knowledge and skills they learned in the first half of their careers. For this reason, educators are teaching students self-development skills that show them how to take the initiative to improve their skills.

As it stands, the environment is rife with various platforms designed to teach new skills and help people improve on existing ones. For example, the $3.25 billion Udemy is an online educational platform designed to assist people who want to improve their skills. The platform offers numerous courses across diverse topics.

Masterclass is another major player in the continuing education and self-improvement online educational platform. As opposed to hiring the average educator skilled in the subject matter being taught, practitioners (often celebrities) in the field teach the courses on Masterclass. The platform has become so popular that the company raised $225 million after being valued at $2.75 billion.

Biking and Weight Loss

Biking is a great way to get fit and trim down in your leisure time. However, suppose you are engaging in the activity of biking solely for weight loss. In that case, it is essential that you properly structure your workout a little differently than if you were riding for fitness or fun. Biking has many benefits aside from losing weight, such as mental and emotional advantages. However, if you have any underlying health conditions, you should visit a doctor before beginning any weight loss regimen. Following the right tips for getting a bike and structuring an optimal workout can help you shed some weight and significantly boost your fitness levels.

The first step to take when setting up a plan to shed weight while biking is to set a realistic goal. The body mass index (BMI) can be quite useful in setting a realistic target. Doctors and other medical professionals use this guide, which is based on a person’s height-to-weight ratio, to identify a healthy target weight to achieve. An alternative goal would be to attain a healthy body fat percentage. A body fat percentage of 15 to 18 percent is healthy for a man, while 25 to 32 percent is considered healthy for a woman. As a result, men regularly exercising by engaging in activities like biking can achieve body fat percentages of 8 to 10 percent, while women can attain 24 to 28 body fat percentages.

As well as helping you lose weight, bikes can also double as an efficient form of transport. Therefore, switching your mode of transportation to work guarantees that you will be getting a good amount of exercise in the time you would have spent traveling. One can easily lose weight by substituting biking for driving. For example, in 2015, a study by the University of East Anglia and the Center for Diet and Activity Research proved that individuals who traveled on bikes instead of driving or using public transport lost an average of seven kilograms with 30 minutes of biking every day for a year. Added benefits of biking include increased memory, concentration, and creativity. These benefits help to boost your productivity at work and in other areas. Biking is also a form of aerobic exercise, and this has proven to decrease anxiety and stress levels in individuals.

Riding your bike provides you with good cardio and strength training. This is possible because it is nearly effortless to get cardio while building muscle. Further, the higher your muscle mass, the higher your resting metabolic rate, which automatically translates to you burning more calories throughout the day. In order to lose weight, a calorie deficit is vital. Therefore, you will also likely need to make changes to your diet to achieve significant results.

Processed foods and sugar do not contain a lot of nutrition, regardless of the amount of energy they supply to the body. In addition, any fat that is not burned off immediately is converted and stored in the body as fat, which you are trying to lose. Therefore, it is best to have desserts once in a while as treats, rather than consuming them frequently. You should also limit sugary snacks and chocolate. If you are actively trying to shed weight, eating well-balanced meals and avoiding most sports energy bars is best.

How to Maintain Your Bicycle’s Wheels

Bicycles are a pretty reliable and adventurous means of transportation. To keep the bicycle in top performance, maintaining it is necessary. To ensure this as a bicycle owner, regular checks on the condition of various parts of the bicycle are necessary. Unattended issues are dangerous and can cut short the ride prematurely or endanger your safety. The wheels are the part of the bicycle that connects the rider and the bike to the earth’s terrain. Thus, they must be well-maintained, durable, and precise; this would also minimize repairs and extend their life-span.

Before riding a bike, you should carry out the truing and tension correctly to ensure their strength and durability. Where the spoke tension is uneven, too much or too little, it can cause irregular wheel performance and premature bearing failure. The bicycle rings are like stringed instruments, and you can pluck them similarly. The pitch that comes from the plucking will tell you the tightness of the spoke. Where the spoke is tight, the pitch would be higher. The type of tire, weight of the rider, type of terrain, and pressure of the tires all affect the wheel’s tension. Visiting a bike repair service or shop may be the best option for addressing this so that you do not damage the spokes.

A vital part of your wheelset is the bearings. You should check them at least every month, especially if you ride the bike in muddy or wet conditions. You need to check and see if there is clear friction or lateral play when you spin the wheel. If there is much friction when you spin the wheel, you would need to replace the bearings. To maintain the freehub, clean and re-grease the strings and pawls using the appropriate lubricant. It is also imperative to check the rims from time to time, internally and externally.

One of the fundamental aspects of wheel maintenance is cleaning them periodically; This doesn’t mean they need washing every day. The type of bike and how often you ride it may determine how often it needs cleaning. Mountain bikes would require cleaning more frequently due to their usage in more rugged terrains and muddy roads - perhaps one to two times a week.

You can clean road bikes monthly since they ride over flat roads and pavements. Mild soap and water are sufficient for cleaning the rim brake surface, while you can use isopropyl alcohol and a clean rag for the rim brake or disc brake surfaces. Dirt can get in contact with the bearings from the hub’s seals, so you should wipe the dirt and grime off of it. You may also apply waterproof grease for extra protection.

Your tires are also an essential part of your ride and wheel maintenance. Checking the air pressure, for example, is crucial. The air pressure of your tires affects your safety and the bicycle's performance. You can use an air gauge to check if the inner tubes have enough air pressure; if they do not, you would need to add some air with a tire pump. You should also check the tire sidewalls for any significant wear and look out for slits in the tire.
